The open-loop air/fuel ratio control system is ideal for low-power-density engines ( usually < 200kW ), offering a simple design that facilitates installation and maintenance. In this system, the air/fuel mixture is mechanically adjusted, while the ECU solely manages ignition timing and engine speed control.

While the closed-loop air/fuel ratio control system delivers superior performance in larger engines with benefits like reduced emissions, lower exhaust temperatures, and enhanced durability under heavy loads it also comes with challenges, including greater system complexity, demanding calibration processes, and stringent turbocharger/intercooler specifications.
